how to set up a credit card terminal?

starting a new business and wondering how to get set up so i can accept charge cards?…please tell me everything…also are they connected through a computer?, phone line?….any help…thanks

How you intend to accept payments and what product or service you are offering. This will determine your rates and which processing companies will accept you. It will also determine what kind of equipment or software you will need.

The first link below explains everything about merchant accounts and I highly recommend reading it. It will explain a lot. The second link below compares the different kinds of merchant accounts available out there and should help you figure out which one is best for you. The basic gist of it is this:

- If you are going to be doing anything other then Internet sales then you’ll want a real merchant account.

- If you’re going to do Internet sales then you need to decide between a true merchant account and a third party processor. As a general rule if you won’t be processing a lot of transactions you will want to use a third party processor. If you will be processing a lot of transactions then you will want a true merchant account.

If you decide that you want/need a true merchant account I’ve attached a worksheet to help you compare providers. Make sure you do compare rates as that is the most important thing in choosing a provider. Some people will try to tell you customer service or something else is the most important thing but that’s a lot of BS. Everyine provides the same service and you rarely, if ever, should need customer service help. If you find that you do need it a lot then you need to find a new processor ASAP.

Once you complete the worksheet use the calculator I linked to to do all of the math for you. It will show you which one is cheaper not only each month but over the course of an entire year.

As far as how you will process credit cards you have a few options. If you are anything but an Internet merchant you can use a credit card terminal. Most of them require an analog telephone line to process your transactions although a lot of the newer ones work over broadband connections. I highly recommend one of those if you will be processing lots of sales. You can also use POS software which requires a computer and can process over a phone line or Internet connection just like a credit card terminal.

If you will be accepting Internet transactions then you will need a payment gateway. A payment gateway acts like a credit card terminal for your website. There are few to choose from. The article I linked to below compares six of them for you. If you need a payment gateway I recommend using Authorize.Net. They are the most popular one in use today and for good reason. They are easy to set up and easy to use. I linked to instructions for integrating it into a website as well.
